America Chavez: The Heroine Who Travels Across Universes
The essentials in 30 seconds: America Chavez, also known as Ms. America, can punch star-shaped portals to any universe in the Marvel multiverse. Introduced to the general public in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, this heroine from a lost utopian dimension is also a pioneering comics figure: the first Latina and openly queer superheroine to headline her own title at Marvel. This article traces her origins, powers, role in the multiverse, and future alongside the Young Avengers.
Since her memorable appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022, America Chavez has quickly won over fans of the Marvel multiverse. Her unique power, which allows her to literally punch through reality to travel between universes, makes her one of the most strategically important characters in the MCU's current phase.
But America Chavez has existed for much longer in the comics, where she holds a special place as a pioneering figure for representation at Marvel. This article offers a comprehensive overview: her origins, powers, cinematic adaptation, connection to the Young Avengers, and how to incorporate her visual universe into your Avengers collection.
Who Is America Chavez? An Introduction to the Character
America Chavez first appeared in comics in 2011, created by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta. Originally from the Utopian Parallel, an ideal parallel universe destroyed before her eyes, she grows up certain that every world deserves to be protected. Her personal story is marked by an immense loss: her two mothers, divine figures from her home universe, sacrifice their lives to save her as their dimension collapses.
This founding tragedy shapes every aspect of America's personality: determined, protective, sometimes gruff, but driven by a deep desire to do good wherever she goes, no matter which universe she is in. She quickly adopts the codename Ms. America, as a tribute to the classic superheroine Miss America, before simply becoming America Chavez over the course of her appearances.
Her powers: star portals to the multiverse
America Chavez's signature power is her ability to open star-shaped portals that literally tear through the fabric of reality, transporting her and her companions to any point in the multiverse. Unlike other forms of dimensional travel seen in the MCU, such as those used by the TVA, America's portals are instinctive rather than technological: they sometimes react more to her emotions than to her conscious will, making them unpredictable when she loses control of her emotions.
In addition to this unique gift, America possesses superhuman strength, endurance, and durability that place her among the most physically powerful heroines in the Marvel universe. She can fly, survive in the vacuum of space, and withstand blows that would knock down most Avengers.
How exactly do her portals work?
In both the comics and the MCU, America's portals materialize as luminous stars that she shapes with her fists, as if she were literally punching through space-time. In Multiverse of Madness, this power is presented as extremely rare, if not unique: Wanda Maximoff herself seeks to seize it to reach the universe where the children from her alternate reality live, making America the central focus of the film's plot.

Beyond her spectacular powers, America Chavez holds a historic place in the Marvel universe: she is the first openly queer Latina superheroine to headline her own solo title at the publisher, with the America series launched in 2017. This pioneering status makes her a particularly beloved character among many readers who finally see themselves represented in a leading heroine.
An active member of the Young Avengers in the comics, America teams up with characters such as Kate Bishop, Kid Loki, and Wiccan, forming a new generation of heroes that carries on the legacy of the original Avengers. This passing of the torch between generations echoes what we see with other young MCU heroes, such as Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), who is also destined for a bright future alongside the MCU's young recruits.
Her introduction to the MCU: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Actress Xochitl Gomez portrays America Chavez in her MCU debut. The film opens directly with her and a variant of Doctor Strange fleeing a monster through the multiverse, before an uncontrolled portal sends them into the main universe. From this opening scene, the tone is set: America is both a potential threat and a valuable ally because of the coveted power she possesses.
Throughout the film, she must face Wanda Maximoff, who has become the Scarlet Witch and is willing to do anything to steal her powers and reunite with her children in an alternate universe. This confrontation between the two characters is one of the film's strongest dramatic elements, pitting a heroine who is still learning against one of the most powerful entities in the entire Marvel universe, as detailed in our article on the duel between Wanda and Doctor Strange.

In the comics, America Chavez is inseparable from the Young Avengers, the team of young heroes that carries on the legacy of the original generation. Alongside Kate Bishop, heir to Hawkeye, America forms one of the most popular duos of this new generation, combining brute strength with tactical precision.
With the growing presence of young heroes in the MCU, such as Kate Bishop in the Hawkeye series and Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel, many fans hope to see a true Young Avengers team form on screen, in which America Chavez would naturally have an important place thanks to her unique interdimensional travel powers, which are particularly useful for bringing together a team scattered across the multiverse.
Her role in the Marvel multiverse and the TVA
America Chavez holds a uniquely strategic position in the mapping of the Marvel multiverse: unlike the TVA, which monitors and prunes timelines from the outside, or the variants that exist only within their own reality, America can travel freely from one universe to another through sheer willpower. This ability makes her a potential linchpin for any major future multiversal event in the MCU, including the next major Avengers sagas.
Her journey also illustrates a broader exploration of the concept of parallel realities in cinema, a theme we discuss in detail in our article dedicated to Marvel’s Parallel Universes. Every world America travels through has its own rules, its own versions of familiar heroes, and sometimes even unforeseen dangers that threaten the balance of the entire multiverse.
